My oldest daughter (2.5) and I took a trip to our local Dollar General this morning to find some things to help us create a rubber ducky sorting/counting activity. We also searched the house to find all of the rubber ducks and colorful numbers we used!

Before we left for the store, we hunted down our bath time foam numbers, rubber ducks, and container with a lid. We decided all we needed to buy was paper plates and some kind of material that would look like water under the ducks. When we got to the store, we discovered the decorative sea glass was on sale. Our total purchase for the two containers of sea glass and paper plates was $8 - not too bad for something we can reuse for activities in the future!
We started with a Sterilite container with a locking lid, that I had previously purchased at Dollar General for $10. In the future, I will be buying the set of Sterilite containers that are linked in the image below. This way, I can leave our activity bins together and get them out easily to use!
Then, we added our sea glass and rubber ducks. If I were to do this again, I would try to find small ducks so we could have more to sort and count. I would also try to get more ducks of each color to work on pattern making.
Finally, we spread out our plates and numbers to sort the ducks and match the colors. When she is older, we will use the numbers to help us count to make the number on each plate.
For her last birthday, someone gifted us the bath time foam numbers but you can find a link to purchase them in the image below.
If you don't want to purchase them, you can always write the numbers on the plates or color the plates for color sorting.
The next time we do this, we might play this way again. Or, we might make "nests" by painting the plates brown first and then adding a shape to each plate and draw matching shapes on the bottom of each duck.
